Review: Sulwhasoo Evenfair Perfecting Cushion Brightening

And it’s time for yet another base product! After an influx of foundation reviews (The History of Whoo Essential Foundation, MAC Pro Longwear Nourishing Waterproof Foundation, VDL Perfecting Last Foundation), it’s time to revert back to the craze of the moment – BB cushions! Now Sulwhasoo last launched their Evenfair Perfecting Cushion at end-2013, and this is now a new version – the Brightening version. Being typically me, I couldn’t resist the word “New” when I saw it at Sulwhasoo counters in Seoul, so here I am, with yet another BB cushion to my collection (which some may call a hoard by now heh).

I say…

The Packaging: Similar to its predeccessor, it also comes in a smooth curved-edge casing. An added plus point is the gorgeous bevelled / marbelled pearlesque design on the case – purdeeeee. It’s refillable and the price paid is also for an additional refill. That said, its refill can fit into Laneige’s Pore Control BB Cushion casing BUT not vice versa, cos this Sulwhasoo one is just slightly smaller than Laneige’s. It also comes with the usual sponge applicator as well as a flip-out tray that functions as both a sponge puff holder as well as a lid to prevent the BB cushion from drying out.

The Scent: I was expecting some sort of herbal scent, but surprise! This BB cushion actually smells like a cocktail of citrus fruits – orangey, limey and grapefruity. Now the official scent is supposed to be magnolia – if this is what magnolia really smells, I’m loving it! The scent isn’t overpowering or too strong though – you can smell it during application but it fades off after.

The Application/Effect: Now true to Korean style, this is a glowy, moistfull and dewy product. After the initial first application (which was cooling and lightweight), I had to let it set for a while before putting the glasses on (or else they’d slide down the nose). That said, it still started sliding down about 3 hours after that. This gives a rather glowy moist finish (about 65% dewy to 35% matte), and gives a “shine” to areas such as the nose bridge and cheek bones. Surprisingly, the corners of the nose were exempt from this shine.

The Coverage: It’s got a pretty decent medium-level coverage, especially if you consider the fact that it’s more “moistfull” and does the slip ‘n slide on my face. In fact, I was pretty surprised that the coverage lasted almost my entire day of about 7 hours. The corners of the nose did lose some coverage, but there was no patchiness (probably due to the high moisture content) , and there was also no oxidisation. It’s not strong enough to cover the dark eye circles completely (you can still see some vague dark purplish/bluish undereye dark circles in my photo above), but it’s not that bad till people have to ask if I’ve been up all night.

The Oil Control: It’s an average oil control factor if you compare it with my usual foundations (Etude House’s Stay Up Foundation holds up for an impressive 6-8 hours), but for a dewy BB cushion, its oil control power is pretty decent! I did my first blot after 5 hours, and get this – even though the face was looking “shiny”, the blot sheet did not pick up much oil, proving that it is indeed moisture/dewiness on the skin.

The Verdict: Now when I first applied it on the face, I was like “Oh man, not another dewy-finish BB cushion”. But as the day wore on, I was actually pleasantly surprised by this – yes there is that dewy shine that may not appeal to all, but because I spend a lot of hours in very drying airconditioned environments, this actually helped prevent my skin from drying out and getting flaky. It also amazingly did not slide off as much as I’d expected (although when I blew my nose, it did transfer onto the tissue. You can also see that the part of the nose bridge that’s in contact with the spectacle rest has faded more).  Also, it does indeed give a brightening finish especially when compared with its predecessor (but nothing too dramatic), and more importantly, does not oxidise or darken at the end of the day. Overall, this BB cushion gives a natural brightened finish that’s perfect for days when my skin is feeling drier, or when I know I’m gonna be in places where the skin could dry out faster (oh yes inflight cabin, I’m talking about you). If you’re looking to start easing into the glowy look, this will be a good product to start with.

Note: I bought it for KRW65,000 in Korea, which is about SGD78+. It will retail in Singapore for SGD$80 which surprisingly isn’t that huge of a markup 🙂 available from July 2015 in SG.

  2. Wow! This looks just as good as the Amore Pacific to my eyes and looks like it might yield a better shade match.

P.S. I think I spotted you in Pearypie’s Singapore meetup video. Yes?

    • Yes I actually think it’s as good (if not better) than AmorePacific’s Cushion (mainly because it’s slightly less glowy).

And errr if you saw a floozy flouncing around in a blue + beige dress, that’s me 😀

  5. Chanced upon your review – Does the refill fit into IOPE casing? Would you consider this better then its predecessor in terms of coverage and oil control? Hope to hear from you 🙂

    • hello! Yes this also fits into the IOPE casing, but not vice versa cos the IOPE refill is just slightly larger than the Sulwhasoo one.

This one has slightly better (more radiant) coverage and oil control than its predecessor but still doesn’t take away the need to blot. Hope it helps! 🙂

  6. Hi Dalja,

Are the colors for this same as sulwhasoo evenfair cushion? Also, I want to know if this has more coverage than laneige bb cusion pore control?

can you also review verite and mamonde cushions? thanks, i want to hear about the best coverage cushion.

    Thanks,
    k

    • Hello,
This one has a new shade 17, while 13, 21, 23 and 25 are available for both. this has less coverage than Laneige’s Pore Control BB Cushion. And no, I can’t review Verite cushion cos I don’t have it 🙂 TGIF!

  7. If I’m no 21 in laniege snow cushion would you recommend no 17? I tried the sulwhasoo in no 13 but when it flashes i think its too light. Idk so conflicted between the shades no 17 and no 13.

    • Hi Mia, skin colour and shade colour of products is a very hard thing to say. I cannot give you a definitive answer because I don’t know what your skin tone is, and whether it’s warm or cool. It’s best you try it out at the counters to see for yourself? Even when I buy new cushions, my shade fluctuates from 13, 17, and 21, so I always make sure to try it out first.

  8. Hello Dalja,
Read some of your articles bout cushions & I’m kinda confuse weather to choose between HERA C21, IOPE C21 or SULWHASOO 17/21 coz this is my 1st time trying cushion. Which one among this 3type last longer & nicer?

    • Hey Mei Yun, unfortunately I can’t give you a definitive answer because there are so many factors to consider, such as your skin type, your preferred finish, your country’s climate, your lifestyle and habits

      • Jus notice ur articles bout Hera it’s not suitable for dry skin so nw I wondering between SULWHASOO or IOPE which 1 will look more nature on skin & is IOPE CASING can refill SULWHASOO?

  12. Hello,

My face is extremely oily and I have a lot acne scars. What do you think the most suitable cushion for me? I tried IOPE but it does not last really long on my face.

    Thanks a lot

    • Hello! I’d suggest applying an oil control primer before any bb cushion – try Make Up For Ever or Sulwhasoo’s Luminature Essential Finisher. It helps me control my facial oil secretion too! Then try Laneige’s BB Cushion Oil Control 🙂

  14. Hi there!

Do you find any tone difference between Evenfair and the new Brightening version? I read somewhere that Evenfair is more yellow and Brightening is more peach and that they are completely different. Thanks for all your reviews by the way! They’re amazingly helpful with my choice of cushions. 🙂 Will you be reviewing Hera’s Age Reverse?

    • Hi hi, yes the Brightening ones are slightly more pink-toned. I wouldn’t say they’re that different (as in completely), but there’s definitely a difference. I wanted to review that when I next visited Seoul, but because of MERS, my trip has been postponed… so yes I want to, but not sure when. heh.

  15. Hi, will you recommend Sulwhasoo or Laneige for the cushion? I am choosing my first BB cushion! Thank you for your great blog on Korea cosmetics! 😀

    • Hi, I sometimes dust on a very very light layer of hera powder or YSL’s new universal powder. But my preferred method is really to just use a sheet of paper to dab up the skin and then reapply the cushion 🙂

  16. Which one do you recommend between this sulwhasoo brightening cushion versus biotherm cc cushion ?

Im using sulwhasoo cushion, but it’s almost gone. Im considering trying biotherm but don’t know if which one is better?
